Producer Note

The Vietti family has produced fine wine from the heart of the Langhe since the 1800s, when Carlo Vietti established the winery in the medieval village of Castiglione Falletto. At the end of the 1950s, Alfredo Currado, husband of Luciana Vietti, introduced the idea of producing single vineyard crus in Barolo and Barbaresco and in 1961 one of the very first Barolo Crus was produced by Vietti: Rocche di Castiglione. Alfredo was known locally as the ‘Father of Arneis’ as he dedicated time and research into reviving the nearly extinct Arneis variety. Passionate about fine art, in 1974 Alfredo and Luciana started incorporating beautiful works of art on their iconic wine labels. In the 1990s their son and fourth generation winemaker, Luca Currado Vietti, continued the family winemaking legacy. In 2016, the Krause family purchased Vietti and worked alongside Luca until his retirement in 2023. They further developed the estate with the purchase of new, renowned crus in Barolo and Barbaresco, and in Colli Tortonesi where Timorasso flourishes. In 2022, Vietti was awarded 'Winery of the Year' by Antonio Galloni, Vinous.

Vineyard

The Arneis grapes come from vineyards in the municipality of Santo Stefano Roero in the Roero Arneis DOCG. The tightly undulating, dome-like hills are a geologically distinctive landscape formed by the Cattura del Tanaro (the Tanaro ‘stream capture’), a geomorphic process in which the Tanaro River changed its route about 100,000 years ago. Having been broken down and shuffled about by many millennia of tectonic activity, the layers of clay, limestone and sand alternate slightly chaotically, creating a patchwork of aspects and soil types, rich in fossils. The area is influenced by the proximity of the Alps, where cool air is drawn down from the mountains and the diurnal temperature differences help the vines to retain balancing acidity and slowly build intense aromatic profiles from the long hang-time. The Guyot-cultivated vines have an average age of 30 years and are planted at a density of 4,500 to 5,000 vines per hectare. The vineyard is hand-harvested.

Winemaking

After de-stemming and gentle pressing, fermentation took place at a very slow pace to maintain the fresh and fruity flavours, in steel vats at controlled temperatures of 14-16°C. Halfway through the fermentation, the tank was hermetically sealed in order to reabsorb a small amount of natural CO2. This wine did not undergo malolactic conversion, retaining balancing crispness and it remained on its lees until bottling.
