Chateau Bellefont-Belcier Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe

History

Created in the late 18th century, the Bellefont-Belcier estate is perfectly situated on Saint-Emilion’s south-facing slopes, neighbouring Château Pavie, Château Larcis-Ducasse and Château Tertre Roteboeuf. Château Bellefont-Belcier originally belonged to a very powerful Bordeaux family: at the end of the 18th century, the Count Louis-François de Belcier had first founded the vineyard then at the beginning of the 19th century, he built the Château which he named Bellefont (Belle Fontaine means ‘beautiful fountain’ and is a reference to the numerous springs hidden on the hillside into which the vines plunge their roots.) Major restructuring work in the vineyard was undertaken in 1994. Château Bellefont-Belcier was classified in 2006 as Grand Cru Classé. Peter Kwok acquired the property in 2017

Farming Method & Harvesting

Parcel Management, traditional farming, natural grassing, and respect of the environmental balance. Fermentation is plot by plot in temperature-controlled large wooden and concrete vats. Gentle extraction takes place with careful attention to temperature thresholds. Low-temperature maceration in concrete vats. South facing vines for maximum sun-exposure on the grapes.

70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon

Comment

Aromas of crushed rock and stone in the forefront, the nose then moves towards the floral side before the red berries and liquorice kick in. Flavours of wild raspberry, chocolate, walnut and mushrooms. Its terroir is revealed even more accurately through a refreshing limestone-like tension. Polished and racy tannins, fine, powerful, full and lively.
