Producer Note

The Vietti family has produced fine wine from the heart of the Langhe since the 1800s, when Carlo Vietti established the winery in the medieval village of Castiglione Falletto. At the end of the 1950s, Alfredo Currado, husband of Luciana Vietti, introduced the idea of producing single vineyard crus in Barolo and Barbaresco and in 1961 one of the very first Barolo Crus was produced by Vietti: Rocche di Castiglione. Alfredo was known locally as the ‘Father of Arneis’ as he dedicated time and research into reviving the nearly extinct Arneis variety. Passionate about fine art, in 1974 Alfredo and Luciana started incorporating beautiful works of art on their iconic wine labels. In the 1990s their son and fourth generation winemaker, Luca Currado Vietti, continued the family winemaking legacy. In 2016, the Krause family purchased Vietti and worked alongside Luca until his retirement in 2023. They further developed the estate with the purchase of new, renowned crus in Barolo and Barbaresco, and in Colli Tortonesi where Timorasso flourishes. In 2022, Vietti was awarded 'Winery of the Year' by Antonio Galloni, Vinous.

Vineyard

The grapes for this wine are grown in various selected vineyards sites mostly from the Barolo area and a minor part from Barbaresco, which when blended form the Langhe DOC. The vineyard’s soils consist of marl, which is the combination of limestone and clay in which the Nebbiolo variety has really found its home, on the rolling hills of the Langhe. The climate is Mediterranean with an extended summer and autumn enabling the fickle Nebbiolo to achieve perfect ripeness. Influence from the Alps, with cool mountainous airstreams create high diurnal temperature swings, resulting in a long-hang time in which the grapes build aromatic complexity and achieve balancing acidity. The vines are sustainably cultivated and are hand-harvested by vineyard, when each parcel has achieved optimal ripeness.

Winemaking

A slow, gentle fermentation lasted around three to four weeks at controlled temperatures of 28°-32°C. Malolactic conversion took place in large Slavonian and French oak casks. Each parcel was processed and aged separately until the selection process, where the parcels from the Barolo vines were selected to be included in the blend of Perbacco and those that would continue ageing to become Barolo Castiglione. Perbacco ageing lasted for 18 to 20 months in oak. Perbacco loosely translates as ‘Eureka!’ in old Italian dialect.
