Producer Note

The Pelissero family has been dedicated to farming and agriculture in the Langhe region, for generations. Based in Treiso, they are located in the heart of the Barbaresco DOCG production area. Since 1960, when Luigi Pelissero first bottled their estate wines, they have been producing Piedmont wines that authentically express the fine nuances of Italian varieties such as Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. Luigi’s son, winemaker Giorgio joined the winery having completed his oenology studies and following in his father’s footsteps he has embarked on a journey of continual improvement and research in their 42-hectare vineyard and in the cellar. The vines, which flourish in the distinctive sandstone and blue marl soils, are sustainably cultivated and certified by SQNPI. Giorgio deftly crafts wines with rich flavours and wonderful typicity.

Vineyard

The Vanotu is the most prestigious of the Pelissero vineyards and produced its first wines in 1960. Replanted in 1964, it lies between 300 and 350 metres above sea level and faces completely south. It is on the border of all three municipalities of the Barbaresco production area, Treiso, Barbaresco and Neive and forms part of the enclosure of one of the most beautiful valleys in the region. Located near the top of the hillside, the vineyard is well ventilated, resulting in very little disease pressure. The favourable microclimate and southern exposure guarantee very regular growing seasons even in years when other parts of Barbaresco do not fare well. The soil, which is particularly rich in limestone, produces elegant wines of great personality. They always clearly reflect the vintage with notes of sage, mint, rose, chamomile, thyme and a multitude of other aromatic herbs that only certain privileged parts of the Langhe can express. 'Vanotu; is the diminutive in Piedmontese dialect of Giovanni, Giorgio’s grandfather and previous owner of this vineyard.

Winemaking

Vinified under controlled temperatures, with wild and selected yeasts and carefully timed blending to maximise the varietal characteristics of Nebbiolo. The wine was aged in barriques, of which 80% were new, for 20 to 22 months followed by nine months bottle ageing.
