Producer Note

The Pelissero family has been dedicated to farming and agriculture in the Langhe region, for generations. Based in Treiso, they are located in the heart of the Barbaresco DOCG production area. Since 1960, when Luigi Pelissero first bottled their estate wines, they have been producing Piedmont wines that authentically express the fine nuances of Italian varieties such as Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. Luigi’s son, winemaker Giorgio joined the winery having completed his oenology studies and following in his father’s footsteps he has embarked on a journey of continual improvement and research in their 42-hectare vineyard and in the cellar. The vines, which flourish in the distinctive sandstone and blue marl soils, are sustainably cultivated and certified by SQNPI. Giorgio deftly crafts wines with rich flavours and wonderful typicity.

Vineyard

The Cascina Tolina vineyard is located in the villages of Treiso and Neviglie in DOCG Barbaresco. It covers a single contiguous plot, which is not common in the Langhe, and comprises almost an entire hill, shaped in a natural amphitheatre, with altitudes ranging from 250 to 350 metres. The Guyot-trained vines face south to southeast, providing optimum exposure to sunlight. They were planted in 1950 at a density of 4,000 vines per hectare and in 2001, at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare. The steeper slopes have a harder, more compact subsoil, with a very shallow layer of topsoil that is more vulnerable to erosion. The soils are rich in microelements of magnesium, calcium, iron, phosphorus and potassium and are considered ideal for producing wines which are austere, tannic, rich in structure and mineral aromas- in short: the classic soil suitable for Nebbiolo. The name Tulin probably refers to someone who owned or lived on this property in the past: in Piedmontese dialect the word ‘Tulin’ means a small tin container and the “tulé” was the tinsmith.

Winemaking

Fermentation and skin-contact maceration for around two weeks took place in stainless steel vats at controlled temperatures, followed by a period of natural sedimentation. The wine was transferred to wood casks where 50% was rested in 50-hl oak casks, and 50% in small oak barriques lasting for 18 to 20 months. Following blending, the wine received further bottle ageing for nine months prior to release.
